Miracles and Compassion

Power Flowing from Compassion
Jesus’ ministry reveals something profound about the relationship between power and compassion. Matthew tells us that when Jesus saw the multitude, He was moved with compassion—and then He healed their sick.
The order is significant. Jesus did not see the people merely as an opportunity to demonstrate supernatural power. He saw people in need. His response flowed from His heart of compassion.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly demonstrated this compassionate character. He responded to the sick, the hungry, the grieving, the oppressed, and those who were spiritually lost. His miracles were expressions of the heart of God toward people.
This gives us an important perspective on the miraculous. Power without love does not represent the heart of Christ. A person may desire to see extraordinary manifestations, but if that desire is disconnected from love, humility, and genuine concern for people, the focus has already shifted away from Jesus.
The Primacy of Love
The apostle Paul would later emphasize this principle when teaching the Corinthian church about spiritual gifts. Spiritual manifestations must operate within the framework of love. The gifts of the Spirit are valuable, but Christian character and love cannot be separated from their proper exercise.
Jesus shows us this perfectly. His supernatural authority was never cold or detached. He entered people’s suffering and responded to their needs. His compassion moved Him to act.
This does not mean that every act of compassion will result in an immediate miracle. Jesus did not heal every person in every location during His earthly ministry. God’s sovereignty remains absolute. But whenever we minister to people, compassion should shape our attitude regardless of the outcome.
The miraculous should therefore never turn people into projects.
A hurting person is not an opportunity to build a reputation.
A testimony is not an opportunity for self-promotion.
A miracle is not an opportunity to create a celebrity.
People matter because they matter to God.
Character and Power
This is especially important for anyone who desires to minister through spiritual gifts. The question should not merely be, “Can God use me to perform a miracle?” A deeper question is, “Do I love the people God has placed before me?”
The Holy Spirit does not merely empower believers with gifts; He produces the character of Christ in them. The same Spirit who works through spiritual manifestations also produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Therefore, the pursuit of the miraculous should always be accompanied by the pursuit of Christlike character.
Jesus shows us the perfect pattern:
See people. Love people. Serve people. Point people to God.
When supernatural ministry flows from genuine compassion, the power of God is demonstrated alongside the heart of Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me Your heart of compassion. Help me to see people as You see them and to serve them with genuine love. If You choose to work through me supernaturally, let everything I do reflect Your character and bring glory to Your name. Amen.

- I carry the heart of Christ toward people.
- I will never pursue spiritual power without spiritual character.
- The love of Christ governs my service.
- Everything God does through me will point people to Jesus.

- When praying for someone in need, focus first on loving and serving the person rather than on the manifestation you desire.
- Examine your motives for desiring spiritual gifts and ask whether they are rooted in love and service.
