The Spirituals in One Sentence

The One-Sentence Summary
Paul gives us a concise summary of the purpose of spiritual gifts: “Seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.”
Everything we have studied this month can be summarized in this one statement:
“The spirituals are given by the Holy Spirit to build up the body of Christ, glorify Jesus, and advance the gospel—all governed by love, exercised in order, and submitted to the supremacy of Christ.”
This is the purpose. This is the measure. This is the goal.
If a gift does not build up the Church, it is not being used according to God’s purpose. If a manifestation does not glorify Christ, it is not genuinely from the Spirit. If an experience does not advance the gospel, it has missed the point.
Zeal Directed by Purpose
Paul acknowledges the Corinthians’ zeal for spiritual gifts. They were not indifferent—they were enthusiastic. But their enthusiasm needed to be directed toward the right goal.
Zeal without purpose can produce:
- Competition
- Pride
- Disorder
- Distraction from the gospel
- Spiritual immaturity
Zeal with purpose produces:
- Edification
- Unity
- Humility
- Gospel advancement
- Spiritual growth
The question is not simply whether we are zealous for spiritual gifts. The question is: What is our zeal accomplishing?
The Measure of Gifts
How do we measure the value of spiritual gifts?
Not by:
- How impressive they appear
- How much attention they attract
- How many people are moved emotionally
- How spectacular the manifestation is
But by:
- Whether they build up the Church
- Whether they glorify Christ
- Whether they produce love and unity
- Whether they advance the gospel
This is the standard Paul gives: “to the edifying of the church.”
Applying This Summary
How does this one-sentence summary shape our practice?
- Before exercising a gift, ask:
- “Will this build up others?”
- “Will this glorify Christ?”
- “Will this serve the gospel?”
- While exercising a gift, focus on:
- The needs of others, not your own recognition
- The Spirit’s leading, not your own agenda
- Love, not performance
- After exercising a gift, reflect:
- “Did this edify the Church?”
- “Was Christ glorified?”
- “Were people helped?”
The Purpose in Practice
This summary is not a theory—it is a practical guide for every believer.
- The gift of prophecy builds up the Church through encouragement and exhortation.
- The gift of healing demonstrates God’s compassion and strengthens faith.
- The gift of tongues, when interpreted, brings understanding and edification.
- The gift of wisdom guides the Church through difficult decisions.
- The gift of discernment protects the Church from deception.
Every gift has a purpose. And that purpose is edification.
The Goal Is Christ
The ultimate goal of edification is not just a stronger Church—it is the glory of Christ.
When the Church is built up, Christ is honored.
When believers are strengthened, Christ is glorified.
When the gospel advances, Christ is magnified.
The spirituals exist to serve this purpose. They are not an end in themselves. They are tools for building up the body so that Christ might be exalted.
The spirituals are for the Church. The Church is for Christ. And Christ is the center of it all.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, teach me to use every gift You give for the edification of the Church. Help me to be zealous for spiritual gifts—but to direct my zeal toward building up others, glorifying Christ, and advancing the gospel. Let everything I do serve Your purposes and honor Your name. Amen.
