As Joshua’s leadership came to an end, he gathered the people of Israel and challenged them to make a clear decision. They could continue following the gods of the surrounding nations or devote themselves wholeheartedly to the Lord. Joshua’s own decision was firm and unmistakable: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
This challenge still speaks to believers today. While salvation is received through faith in Christ alone, every believer is continually called to live a life fully devoted to Him. God does not force devotion; He invites His people to willingly surrender every part of their lives to His lordship.
A life devoted to God is marked by undivided loyalty. Christ is not merely one priority among many—He is the center from which every other priority is ordered. Family, work, ministry, relationships, finances, ambitions, and decisions all come under His authority.
This devotion is not sustained by human determination alone. The Holy Spirit strengthens believers to remain faithful, especially when competing voices seek to draw their hearts away from Christ. He continually reminds us of God’s goodness, fills us with love for Jesus, and empowers us to obey His Word.
Joshua’s declaration also reminds us that devotion influences others. His commitment included his household. While each person must respond to God individually, a life wholly devoted to Christ becomes a powerful testimony that encourages family members, friends, and future generations to follow Him.
There will always be competing allegiances. Modern idols may not be carved images, but they can include success, wealth, comfort, popularity, entertainment, or self-interest. Anything that takes Christ’s rightful place in the heart becomes an idol. A devoted believer continually chooses Christ above every competing affection.
This decision is not made once and forgotten. Every day presents fresh opportunities to reaffirm our devotion through obedience, worship, faithful service, and dependence upon God. Daily surrender keeps the heart aligned with Christ.
As believers remain devoted to Jesus, they discover that true joy, peace, and purpose are found not in serving the things of this world but in belonging completely to Him. A life fully given to Christ is never wasted.
Ultimately, wholehearted devotion is the joyful response of those who have experienced the grace of God in Christ.
Those who choose to serve the Lord each day will increasingly reflect His life and bring Him glory.
Prayer
Father, thank You for calling me to belong to You. I choose to serve You with my whole heart. Strengthen me by the Holy Spirit to remain fully devoted to Christ every day of my life. Amen.
