The Christian life is never meant to become stagnant. Peter exhorts believers to “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” Spiritual growth is not optional; it is God’s desire for every believer.
Notice that Peter does not simply say, “Grow.” He tells believers to grow in grace. This reminds us that holiness is not achieved by striving harder but by continually depending upon God’s grace. The same grace that saves us also sustains and transforms us throughout our lives.
Growth also comes through knowing Christ more deeply. Christianity is not merely learning doctrines or gaining biblical information. It is an ever-deepening relationship with the living Lord Jesus. The more believers know Him, the more they are changed into His likeness.
Growing in holiness is often gradual. Just as a tree does not become mature overnight, Christlike character develops through daily fellowship with God. The Holy Spirit patiently renews the mind, shapes the heart, and produces the fruit of righteousness as believers remain connected to Christ.
This growth is evident in many ways. Believers become more humble, more forgiving, more patient, more loving, and more faithful. They increasingly value what Christ values and desire what pleases Him. While perfection awaits Christ’s return, genuine progress should mark the Christian life.
The Holy Spirit uses several means to accomplish this work. He teaches through God’s Word, strengthens believers in prayer, refines them through trials, encourages them through the fellowship of other believers, and continually points them to Christ. Every season of life becomes an opportunity for growth.
Growing in holiness also requires intentional cooperation. Believers are called to remain in God’s Word, cultivate prayer, gather with God’s people, obey what they learn, and yield daily to the Holy Spirit. Growth is God’s work, but He calls us to actively participate in what He is doing.
Peter concludes by directing all glory to Christ. Spiritual growth is never for self-promotion. The more believers mature, the more clearly they recognize that every step of progress is the result of God’s grace. Therefore, all praise belongs to Jesus alone.
Ultimately, growing in holiness means growing in Christ.
The closer believers walk with Jesus, the more His life is reflected in everything they do.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your transforming grace. Help me to grow daily in the knowledge of Christ, and let the Holy Spirit continue to shape me into His likeness. Amen.
