Miracles in the Book of Acts

Acts 5 summarizes this pattern: “by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people.” These signs were not isolated events—they were part of the regular ministry of the early Church.
The miracles in Acts included:
- Healing the lame (Acts 3)
- Deliverance from demonic oppression (Acts 16)
- Raising the dead (Acts 9, 20)
- Supernatural deliverance from prison (Acts 5, 12, 16)
- Judgment on those who opposed God’s work (Acts 5)
- Visions and revelations (Acts 9, 10, 16, 18, 22, 27)
These works demonstrated the reality of God’s power and confirmed the apostolic message.
The Purpose of Miracles in Acts
The miracles in Acts served several purposes:
- Confirmation of the Message — The signs confirmed that the gospel was from God (Hebrews 2:3–4). When Peter healed the lame man, it opened the door for him to preach Christ.
- Demonstration of God’s Power — The miracles showed that the kingdom of God had broken into human history. God’s power was greater than sickness, demons, prison, and even death.
- Advancement of the Mission — The miracles created opportunities for the gospel to be proclaimed. They drew crowds and opened hearts to the message.
- Authentication of the Apostles — The signs demonstrated that the apostles were sent by God and spoke with His authority.
- Glory to God — The ultimate purpose of every miracle was to bring glory to God and point people to Jesus.
The Pattern of Acts
The book of Acts reveals a consistent pattern:
- Preaching — The apostles proclaimed the gospel.
- Signs — God confirmed the message with supernatural works.
- Salvation — People believed and were added to the Church.
- Edification — The Church grew in faith and love.
- More Preaching — The cycle continued as the gospel advanced.
The pattern shows that miracles were not the end goal—they served the larger mission of making disciples of all nations.
Lessons for Today
What can we learn from the miracles in Acts?
- God still works supernaturally — The same Spirit who empowered the early Church empowers believers today.
- The gospel remains central — Miracles serve the message; they do not replace it.
- Expect God to confirm His Word — We should pray for and expect God to work in power as we proclaim Christ.
- Stay faithful in ordinary ministry — The early Church was faithful in teaching, fellowship, prayer, and service—even when miracles were not the focus.
- Give God the glory — When signs and wonders happen, the glory belongs to God, not to human instruments.
A Balanced Expectation
The book of Acts provides both encouragement and caution.
Encouragement: God is powerful and works through His people to advance His mission.
Caution: The pattern in Acts is not a formula to be replicated by human effort. We cannot manufacture the Spirit’s work. We depend on His sovereign activity.
Let us be faithful to proclaim Christ, pray for God’s power, and trust Him to work in His way and His time.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the record of Your power in the book of Acts. Teach me to trust You for supernatural works as I proclaim the gospel. Help me to keep Christ central and give You all the glory for every sign and wonder. Amen.
