JULY — DAY 20: Pride and Stagnation

Devotional:
One of the greatest obstacles to spiritual growth is pride. Pride subtly shifts the believer’s confidence from Christ to self. It may appear as self-sufficiency, the desire for recognition, an unwillingness to receive correction, or the belief that personal strength is enough. Whatever its form, pride hinders the work God desires to accomplish in His children.
Scripture warns that pride leads to destruction because it causes people to rely on themselves rather than on God. Spiritual growth can never flourish where self is exalted above Christ.
The Christian life begins with grace and continues by grace. Just as believers could not save themselves, neither can they mature through self-effort. Every step of growth depends upon God’s continual work through the Holy Spirit.
Jesus is the perfect example of humility. Though He is the Son of God, He humbled Himself, submitted to the Father’s will, and served others in love. His humility was not weakness but complete dependence upon the Father.
As believers behold Christ, the Holy Spirit produces the same humility within them. They become more willing to learn, quicker to repent, slower to judge others, and more eager to give God the glory. A humble believer recognizes that every spiritual victory is the result of God’s grace.
Humility also keeps the heart teachable. Those who acknowledge their need for God remain open to His correction, instruction, and guidance. They understand that spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey and that there is always more to learn from Christ.
Pride, on the other hand, often leads to spiritual stagnation. When believers become self-reliant or believe they have “arrived,” growth begins to slow. Dependence on Christ is gradually replaced with confidence in personal knowledge, experience, or achievements.
Christ-Centered Focus:
The Holy Spirit continually calls believers back to humble dependence upon Jesus. As they surrender their lives to Him, He continues His transforming work, producing greater wisdom, love, and Christlike character. True maturity is never marked by self-exaltation but by increasing humility. The closer believers grow to Christ, the more they recognize their continual need for His grace.
Conclusion:
Ultimately, spiritual growth flourishes where humility makes room for the Holy Spirit to work. God gives grace to the humble, and His grace produces lasting growth. Walk in humility today.
Prayer:
Father, keep my heart humble before You. Help me to depend completely on Your grace and to yield daily to the Holy Spirit as He forms the character of Christ within me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
