DAY 26 — THE GOSPEL VS RELIGION AND LEGALISM

Devotional
Religion and the gospel may appear similar on the surface, but at their core they move in opposite directions. Religion says, “Do, and you may be accepted.” The gospel says, “You are accepted in Christ; therefore, live.” This distinction is not small—it is the difference between bondage and freedom.
Legalism arises when human effort is added to Christ’s finished work as a requirement for acceptance with God. While it may promote outward discipline, it quietly replaces trust in Christ with confidence in performance. Over time, this produces either pride in success or despair in failure—both of which undermine genuine faith.
The gospel confronts legalism by declaring justification complete in Christ. Believers are not made right with God by rule-keeping, rituals, or moral consistency, but by faith in Jesus alone. Obedience does not disappear under the gospel; it is restored to its proper place—as the fruit of grace, not the foundation of salvation. Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly and bore its judgment fully. To return to legalism is to live as though His work were unfinished.
The gospel invites believers to rest in Christ’s sufficiency and to obey from love rather than fear. Freedom in Christ is not lawlessness—it is joyful obedience rooted in grace.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for the freedom the gospel brings.
Deliver my heart from reliance on performance or religious pride.
Teach me to obey You from love, not fear, trusting fully in Christ’s finished work.
Amen.

- I declare that I am justified by faith in Christ alone, not by the works of the law.
- I declare that I am fully accepted by God because of Jesus, not because of my performance.
- I declare that I walk in obedience as a joyful response to grace, not as a means to earn approval.
Action Points
- Identify one area where you subtly rely on your own performance (e.g., prayer consistency, serving, moral behavior) for a sense of spiritual security rather than trusting in Christ’s finished work.
- Rest daily in the truth of Galatians 2:16. When you feel inadequate or condemned, consciously affirm: “My standing with God is secure in Christ, not in me.”
- Obey God today in a specific way (e.g., show kindness, practice integrity) as an act of gratitude for His grace, not as an attempt to gain His favor.
