The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts

What You Will Walk Away With

Given to Profit Others
The Holy Spirit does not give spiritual gifts merely to make individual believers feel special or spiritually significant. Paul gives us a clear purpose for these manifestations: “the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”
The word “manifestation” is important. A spiritual gift makes the activity of the Holy Spirit evident through a believer. Yet the manifestation is not given for the believer to possess as a badge of distinction. It is given “to profit withal”—for the benefit of others.
This immediately changes how we should think about spiritual gifts.
The question is not simply, “What gift do I have?”
A better question is, “How can what God has entrusted to me benefit others?”
The gifts of the Spirit are therefore fundamentally service-oriented. God equips His people so that they can participate in His work of strengthening, encouraging, helping, and building up the Church.
No Room for Competition
This explains why spiritual gifts should never become tools for competition. If one believer uses a gift to establish superiority over another, the purpose of the gift has already been misunderstood. The Spirit gives different gifts to different people precisely because the body of Christ needs diversity.
A gift that appears spectacular is not automatically more valuable than one that operates quietly. What matters is whether the gift is functioning according to God’s purpose and bringing genuine benefit to His people.
This principle also protects the Church from spiritual performance. A manifestation should not be pursued simply because it attracts attention. The question should always be whether it genuinely serves God’s purposes and benefits the people being ministered to.
Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 12–14 repeatedly moves toward edification. Spiritual activity in the church is meant to strengthen the body, not confuse, manipulate, or divide it.
Love, Wisdom, and Discernment
This means that love, wisdom, and discernment are essential in the exercise of spiritual gifts. A gift may be genuine, but if it is exercised selfishly, carelessly, or without love, it can fail to accomplish the purpose for which God gave it.
The Holy Spirit’s work is therefore both powerful and purposeful.
He does not manifest Himself merely to impress people.
He manifests Himself to accomplish God’s purposes through His people.
Every believer should therefore approach spiritual gifts with humility. Whatever God has entrusted to us is ultimately for someone else’s blessing. We are stewards of God’s grace, called to use what we receive faithfully.
The healthiest question is not:
“How impressive is my gift?”
but:
“Who is being helped because God is working through me?”
That is the heart of spiritual gifting.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for the gifts You give to Your people. Teach me to use everything You have entrusted to me for the benefit of others. Keep me from pride and self-promotion, and let my service strengthen and bless the body of Christ. Amen.
