Day 1 — Who Is the Holy Spirit? (Person, Not Power) | JD Devotional

MAY — DAY 1: Who Is the Holy Spirit? (Person, Not Power)

Date: Friday, May 1, 2026

Focus Scripture:
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” — John 14:16–17 (KJV)

What You Will Walk Away With

  1. The Holy Spirit Is a Person, Not an Impersonal Force — You will discover that the Holy Spirit is not an “it” but a “He”—a Person who thinks, speaks, leads, comforts, and relates.
  2. He Relates, Speaks, Leads, and Dwells Within Believers — You will understand that He is actively involved in your daily life, teaching, reminding, guiding, and strengthening you.
  3. Knowing Him Personally Is Central to the Christian Life — You will learn that the Spirit is not merely to be experienced occasionally, but to be known daily in personal relationship.

Devotional

Many people think of the Holy Spirit as a power, a force, or an influence. They imagine an impersonal energy, like electricity or wind, that flows through believers to produce spiritual effects. Some speak of “using” the Spirit’s power, as if He were a resource to be tapped.

But Scripture reveals something deeper—the Holy Spirit is a Person. He is not an “it,” but a “He.” He thinks, speaks, leads, comforts, and relates. He has a will, emotions, and intellect. He can be grieved, resisted, and quenched. Only a Person can be treated this way.

Jesus described Him as “another Comforter.” This is important. The word “another” means one of the same kind—not a different kind, but the same kind. Just as Jesus walked with His disciples, spoke to them, and guided them, the Holy Spirit now comes to continue that relationship.

He is not a replacement of lesser value, but the continuation of Christ’s presence. Jesus was with them; the Spirit would be in them. Jesus was their Companion; the Spirit would be their indwelling Comforter. The same intimacy, the same guidance, the same presence—now made even closer.

As a Person, the Holy Spirit desires relationship. He is not a tool to be wielded or a force to be harnessed. He is a Divine Person to be known, loved, and obeyed. He is not merely to be experienced occasionally, but to be known daily.

He teaches. He said, “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things” (John 14:26). He reminds. He brings to remembrance the words of Christ. He guides. He leads into truth. He strengthens. He empowers for witness and obedience.

The world cannot receive Him because it does not know Him. This shows that the Holy Spirit is not accessed through intellect or effort, but through relationship. He is known by those who belong to Christ. He is revealed to those who trust in the Son.

Jesus also said, “He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” This is profound. Under the Old Covenant, the Spirit came upon people for specific tasks. He empowered judges, prophets, and kings for particular missions. But now, He dwells within believers permanently.

This is the reality of the New Covenant—God living inside you by His Spirit. Your body becomes a temple. Your heart becomes His dwelling place. You are never alone, never abandoned, never without His presence.

Understanding that the Holy Spirit is a Person changes everything. You no longer relate to Him as a distant force, but as a present Companion. You become aware of His voice, His leading, and His presence in your daily life.

He comforts you in times of difficulty. When you are lonely, He is there. When you are afraid, He whispers peace. When you are confused, He brings clarity.

He guides you when decisions are unclear. He leads you away from danger and toward God’s will. He prompts, nudges, and directs—not with forceful coercion, but with gentle conviction.

He strengthens you when you are weak. When you cannot pray, He intercedes. When you cannot stand, He upholds. When you cannot see, He illuminates.

This is not theoretical—it is relational. It is not doctrine to be studied, but a Person to be known.

Many believers desire the power of the Holy Spirit but neglect relationship with Him. They seek His gifts but ignore His presence. They want His fire but not His fellowship.

Yet His power flows through fellowship. The same Spirit who empowers is the same Spirit who indwells. You cannot separate His power from His person. As you know Him, trust Him, and walk with Him, His work becomes evident in your life.

Christ-Centered Focus

Ultimately, the Holy Spirit reveals Christ. He does not point to Himself, but to Jesus. Jesus said, “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” (John 16:14).

The Spirit’s work is Christ-centered. He takes what belongs to Jesus and makes it real to you. He shines the spotlight on the Son, not on Himself. To know the Spirit is to know Jesus more deeply. To walk with the Spirit is to be conformed to Christ.

As you grow in relationship with Him, your understanding of Christ deepens, and your walk with God becomes more real.

Conclusion

The Christian life is not meant to be lived alone. The Holy Spirit is with you—and in you. He is not a distant force or an impersonal power. He is a Person. He dwells within you. He desires fellowship with you.

Today, begin to know Him. Not as a theological concept, but as a living Person. Speak to Him. Listen for His voice. Follow His leading. And let the reality of His indwelling presence transform your daily walk.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to know You as a Person and not just as power. Teach me to walk with You daily and to recognize Your presence in my life. Open my heart to deeper fellowship with You. Guide me, speak to me, and lead me into truth. I do not want to use You; I want to know You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
