Being caught up in a terror attack is something most of us will likely never experience. But imagine being the victim of two.

That is exactly what happened to Mike Dempsey, who found himself working inside Tower 2 of the World Trade Center on September 11 2001.

Mike Dempsey sat at his dining-room table in his north Raleigh home Monday night and shared his story of surviving both the 9/11 terror attacks and the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Dempsey managed to escape. Then, 16 years later he was listening to Jason Aldean perform in Vegas when gunfire rang out. The panic in both situations had painful similarities, Mike said.

“Those are images you can’t ever get over,” he said, according to FaithIt. Despite the horrific suffering and horror, Mike believes that God has a plan for his life and will use his experiences for good. “Maybe God has a plan for me, and I can help,” the father of two explains. “Instead of being angry or upset, I’m going to try to find what the families and survivors are going to need.”

After 9/11, Mike threw himself into charity work, and helping others, which ultimately helped him cope with the with the trauma and survivor’s guilt he’s now reliving today.

His plan is to do the same now. Mike hopes to help the victims and survivors, and to do things that bring good out of such horror.

He can’t understand how he’s still here, but he knows that every day he’s blessed with is another opportunity to help others
