APRIL — DAY 3: Faith Comes by Hearing

Date: Friday, April 3, 2026

Focus Scripture:
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17 (KJV)

What You Will Walk Away With

  1. Faith Is Not Self-Generated — You will discover that faith does not originate within you; it is received through hearing God’s Word.
  2. The Word of God as the Means of Faith — You will understand that Scripture is not merely information about God but the instrument God uses to create and sustain faith.
  3. Christ as the Living Word — You will see that all Scripture points to Jesus, and hearing the Word is ultimately hearing of Him.

Where does faith come from?

If you have ever felt that your faith is too weak, that you cannot muster enough belief, that you need to try harder to trust—this truth is for you. Faith does not originate within you. It is not something you manufacture, conjure, or force into existence by sheer willpower.

Paul makes this clear in Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Faith comes by hearing. It is received, not generated. It is awakened, not self-produced. The Word of God goes out, and faith rises in response. It is the seed (Luke 8:11) planted by the Sower, taking root in hearts prepared by the Spirit.

This means you do not need to work yourself into faith. You need to place yourself under the hearing of God’s Word.

Think of the difference between trying to light a fire with wet wood versus standing in the sunlight. You cannot force warmth from cold logs. But when the sun rises, its rays naturally bring heat. Faith is like that. It is not something you produce—it is something that happens as you hear what God has spoken.

This is why Scripture reading, preaching, and teaching are not optional extras in the Christian life. They are the means by which faith is born and sustained. The Word does not merely inform you about God—it brings you into His presence. It does not simply give you data—it creates life.

Martin Luther captured this beautifully: “Faith comes from hearing the Word of God, not from hearing about the Word of God, but from hearing the Word itself.” Not secondhand reports, but the living voice of God speaking through Scripture.

Faith comes by hearing. But hearing what? “Hearing by the word of God.” The Greek word is rhema—the spoken, living, active word that does what it says. This is not mere information. This is the voice of God that created the universe, that spoke through prophets, that is alive and active (Hebrews 4:12).

When you hear God’s Word, something happens. Faith is awakened. Doubt is confronted. Hope is kindled. The Spirit takes the written Word and makes it a living Word to your soul.

This is why the enemy works so hard to keep you from Scripture. He knows that faith thrives where the Word is heard—and withers where it is neglected.

Christ-Centered Focus

The Word of God ultimately points to the Word made flesh.

John 1:1–14 tells us that Jesus is the Logos—the Word—who was with God and was God, who became flesh and dwelt among us. Every Scripture finds its fulfillment in Him. Every promise is “yes” in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20). Every shadow points to the substance who is Christ.

When you hear the Word, you are hearing of Jesus. The Old Testament prepares for Him. The Gospels reveal Him. The Epistles explain Him. The entire Bible testifies of Him.

This means faith comes by hearing—and what faith hears is Christ. Not principles, not techniques, not moral lessons—but Jesus Himself. Faith is awakened not by learning about God in the abstract, but by encountering God in Christ through the Word.

The Word is not a dead letter. It is the living voice of the living God, speaking of the living Savior. And when you hear it, faith rises—not because you are strong, but because He is faithful.

Conclusion

Faith is not something you work up—it is something you receive. It comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

Today, if your faith feels weak, do not despair. You do not need to try harder. You need to listen more. Place yourself under the hearing of God’s Word. Open Scripture. Listen to preaching. Let the living voice of God speak into your situation.

The same Word that created light from darkness can create faith in your heart. The same Word that raised Lazarus from the dead can raise hope from your despair. The same Word that spoke through the prophets speaks to you today.

Listen. Faith is waiting in the hearing.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You that faith does not depend on the strength of my believing but on the power of Your Word. Forgive me for the times I have tried to generate faith in my own strength, exhausting myself in striving instead of resting in hearing. Open my ears to Your voice. Speak through Your Word today, and let faith rise in response. You are the Word made flesh—and I want to hear You.
In Your name,
Amen.

Declaration

  • I declare that faith is not self-generated—it is received through hearing God’s Word.
  • I declare that Scripture is not mere information but the living instrument by which God creates and sustains faith.
  • I declare that every Word points to Christ, the Word made flesh, and in hearing Him, my faith is awakened.

Action Points

  1. Place yourself under the hearing of God’s Word today. Open Scripture and read slowly, listening for God’s voice rather than simply gathering information.
  2. Ask the Spirit to awaken faith as you read. Before you open the Bible, pray: “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.”
  3. Identify one area where you have been trying to manufacture faith. Release that striving and simply place yourself in the hearing of God’s Word about that situation.

Memory Verse
