JUNE — DAY 19: Fasting and Self-Control
Date: June 19, 2026
Focus Scripture:
“And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.”
— Matthew 4:2 (KJV)
What You Will Walk Away With:
- Spiritual focus — Fasting strengthens spiritual focus and dependence on God
- Spirit-empowered self-control — Self-control grows as believers yield to the Holy Spirit
- Weakening the flesh — Spiritual discipline helps weaken the dominance of the flesh
Devotional:
Fasting is one of the spiritual disciplines God uses to strengthen believers inwardly. Throughout Scripture, fasting is connected with prayer, humility, consecration, and deeper dependence on God.
Jesus Himself fasted before facing temptation in the wilderness. Though He was physically weak from fasting, He remained spiritually strong and fully submitted to the Father.
Fasting does not earn God’s favor or make believers more accepted by Him. Acceptance comes through Christ alone. Rather, fasting helps position the believer to become more sensitive to God and less controlled by fleshly desires.
The flesh constantly seeks comfort, pleasure, impatience, and self-gratification. Fasting helps expose how strongly the flesh tries to dominate thoughts, emotions, and desires.
During fasting, believers intentionally deny certain physical appetites in order to focus more deeply on God. This practice strengthens spiritual discipline and reminds believers that true life comes from God, not merely from earthly satisfaction.
Self-control is also a fruit of the Spirit. It is not produced merely by rigid self-effort, but through yielding to the Holy Spirit’s work within. As believers walk with God, the Spirit gradually strengthens discipline, restraint, and wisdom.
Fasting also reveals the condition of the heart. Distractions, hidden attitudes, impatience, or unhealthy dependencies often become more noticeable during seasons of prayer and fasting. God uses these moments for growth and refinement.
Christ-Centered Focus:
At the same time, fasting should never become prideful or legalistic. Spiritual disciplines are valuable only when they deepen fellowship with God and point believers toward Christ. The goal is not outward performance, but inward transformation. God desires hearts that are surrendered, humble, and dependent upon Him.
Conclusion:
As believers grow in spiritual discipline, they become less controlled by impulses and more governed by the Spirit. This produces greater stability, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. Ultimately, fasting reminds believers that lasting strength comes from God alone. The Spirit strengthens believers who depend upon God.
Prayer:
Father, teach me to depend fully on You. Strengthen my heart through prayer, fasting, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Help me to walk in self-control and spiritual maturity daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
