Sanctification is one of the central blessings of the gospel, yet it is often misunderstood. Many think it simply means trying harder to live a better life. The Bible presents something far greater. Sanctification is God’s gracious work of setting believers apart to belong to Him and progressively conforming them to the image of His Son.
Paul declares that sanctification is the will of God. This means holiness is not an optional pursuit for a few devoted Christians but God’s purpose for every believer. From the moment we are united with Christ through faith, God begins a transforming work that continues throughout our lives.
Sanctification begins with our position in Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has made believers holy before God. We do not become accepted by living holy lives; we live holy lives because we have already been accepted in Christ. Our standing before God is established by His grace, not by our performance.
From this secure position, God continues His work in us. The Holy Spirit renews our minds, reshapes our desires, and produces Christlike character within us. As we yield to Him, our daily conduct increasingly reflects the life of Christ.
Paul specifically mentions abstaining from sexual immorality because the believer’s body belongs to the Lord. Holiness is not merely an inward experience but is expressed in practical obedience. Every area of life—our thoughts, words, relationships, and actions—is to come under the lordship of Christ.
Sanctification is therefore not self-improvement but Christ’s life being increasingly revealed in His people. We do not overcome sin through determination alone but by abiding in Christ and depending on the Holy Spirit, who works in us both to will and to do God’s good pleasure.
This truth frees believers from both pride and despair. Pride has no place because holiness is God’s work. Despair has no place because God is faithful to complete what He has begun. Every step of growth is evidence of His grace at work.
As believers continually behold Christ through His Word, they are transformed into His likeness. The more we know Him, the more His holiness is reflected in our lives.
Ultimately, sanctification is God’s ongoing work of making the life of Christ visible in those who belong to Him.
Holiness is not about becoming accepted by God—it is about becoming more like the Christ to whom we already belong.
Prayer
Father, thank You for setting me apart in Christ. Continue Your work in me through Your Word and the Holy Spirit, so that my life reflects Jesus more each day. Amen.
