It’s not done out of hatred to someone, it’s done out of love for God
After fighting a lengthy legal battle against a gay man who took them to court over a previous refusal, a Northern Irish bakery has again refused to bake a cake for a gay couple. The McArthurs, who own Ashers Baking Co. have declined to bake a cake for Joe Palmer and his partner Andy Wong for their engagement ceremony.
A friend of the couple, Grainne McCann, ordered the cake online and requested that the words “Gay marriage rocks! Happy engagement, Andy and Joe! Lots of love xxx” be printed on the cake. “My gut instinct told me the cake was refused because it celebrated gay marriage,” said McCann.
Palmer and Wong ended up ordering a cake from a different bakery. “Thank God I live in London, where I can’t imagine something like this happening. I’m staggered that Ashers wouldn’t make the cake, but I’m glad that Londoncakes.com supplied it – the cake was delicious and made with love,” Palmer stated.
On Ashers Baking Co. website, the McArthurs say they chose the name because the Tribe of Asher in the Bible was a tribe of skilled bakers.
Daniel McArthur, and his wife Amy have said that the court battle has actually helped strengthen their faith. Watch them talk more below.
“What matters to me is that I live my life as best as I can in accordance to God’s commands in his word,” says Amy.
Daniel concludes “It’s not done out of hatred to someone, it’s done out of love for God.”
