Day 7 — Miracles and the Message of the Gospel

Miracles and Faith

Focus Scripture:

“And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”
— Matthew 13:58

What You Will Walk Away With

Faith and the Miraculous
The ministry of Jesus reveals a profound relationship between faith and the miraculous. Matthew records that Jesus did not perform many mighty works in His hometown because of their unbelief. This does not mean that human faith possesses supernatural power independently of God. Rather, it reveals how unbelief can become a barrier to receiving and responding to God’s work.

The people of Nazareth had witnessed Jesus’ wisdom and heard about His mighty works, yet they struggled to recognize Him for who He truly was. Their familiarity became an obstacle to faith. They saw Jesus according to their natural understanding and therefore failed to respond appropriately to the revelation before them.

Faith begins with recognizing who God is.

What Biblical Faith Is—and Isn’t
Biblical faith is not merely believing that a miracle is possible. It is trusting God Himself. It rests upon His character, His Word, His faithfulness, and His promises. A person can believe strongly that something will happen and still be mistaken. Christian faith is different because its foundation is God.

This distinction is essential when praying for miracles. Faith does not mean attempting to force God to act according to our preferred outcome. It means approaching Him confidently while submitting to His wisdom and sovereignty.

Jesus Himself never taught people to use faith as a mechanism for controlling God. Instead, biblical faith produces dependence. We pray boldly because God is powerful, but we trust Him completely because He is wise.

Unbelief, on the other hand, can close the heart to what God is doing. It may take the form of cynicism, hardness of heart, refusal to trust God’s Word, or allowing circumstances to become greater in our minds than God’s character.

Faith therefore involves responding to God with openness and trust.

Faith That Grows and Endures
Faith also grows through God’s Word. As believers hear and understand what God has revealed, their confidence in Him deepens. Faith is not manufactured through emotional excitement; it is strengthened as we know the God in whom we have believed.

At the same time, we must avoid blaming people for every situation in which a miracle does not occur. Scripture teaches that God remains sovereign. The absence of a miracle does not automatically prove that someone lacked faith. Faith trusts God both when He performs the miracle we ask for and when He answers differently.

The goal is therefore not to develop a faith that demands miracles.
The goal is to develop a faith that knows God, trusts God, and remains faithful to God.

When God chooses to work miraculously, faith receives His work with gratitude and gives Him glory. When the answer is delayed or different from what we expected, faith continues to trust Him.

That is biblical faith.

Prayer
Father, increase my faith and deepen my confidence in You. Help me to trust Your Word and Your character rather than being controlled by circumstances. Teach me to pray boldly for the miraculous while remaining completely surrendered to Your wisdom and will. Amen.

Declaration
I DECLARE:

Action Points

  1. Read Matthew 13:53–58 and consider how familiarity affected the people’s response to Jesus.
  2. Identify one area where you need to trust God more deeply.
  3. Pray boldly for what you need while deliberately surrendering the outcome to God’s wisdom.
