MAY — DAY 6: The Spirit Who Regenerates (The New Birth)
Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026
Focus Scripture:
“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” — John 3:5–7 (KJV)
What You Will Walk Away With
- The New Birth Is a Work of the Holy Spirit, Not Human Effort — You will discover that no amount of discipline, religion, or good works can produce the new birth; it is entirely the Spirit’s work.
- Regeneration Is a Spiritual Transformation, Not Just Behavior Change — You will understand that being born again is a complete transformation of your inner nature, not merely self-improvement.
- Being Born Again Is the Foundation of the Christian Life — You will learn that the new birth brings you into the kingdom of God and gives you a new identity, new desires, and new capacity to relate to God.
Devotional
At the heart of the Christian life is a profound reality—the new birth. It is not a metaphor, not a religious concept, not a psychological shift. It is a real, supernatural, life-changing event. Without it, Jesus said, no one can enter the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night—a respected Pharisee, a teacher of Israel, a man who knew the Scriptures and followed the law. He had religion, education, and moral discipline. But Jesus told him, “Ye must be born again.”
Nicodemus was confused. He thought of physical birth. But Jesus was speaking of something deeper—a spiritual birth brought about by the Holy Spirit.
Regeneration means being made new from within. It is not simply improving your life or trying harder to do right. It is not turning over a new leaf or making New Year’s resolutions. It is a complete transformation of your inner nature. The Holy Spirit gives you new life, a new identity, and a new capacity to relate to God.
Human effort cannot produce this change. No amount of discipline, religion, or good works can bring about the new birth. You cannot pray enough, give enough, or serve enough to be born again. It is entirely the work of the Spirit. He takes what is spiritually dead and makes it alive.
Jesus explained why: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Flesh gives birth to flesh. Human effort produces only human results. But the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Spiritual life can only come from the Spirit.
Just as physical birth brings you into the natural world, spiritual birth brings you into the kingdom of God. It is not an upgrade to your old life; it is a new creation. Paul writes, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
When you are born again, something real happens within you. Your heart is changed. The stone heart becomes a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). Your desires begin to shift. What you once loved, you now hate. What you once ignored, you now crave. You become aware of God in a new way. The things of God that once felt distant begin to become real and meaningful.
The Spirit does not just give you a new set of rules; He gives you a new nature. You are not just trying to follow Christ from the outside; you are being conformed to Him from the inside.
This does not mean instant perfection. The new birth is the beginning, not the end. You will still struggle. You will still fail. But you are no longer the same. The Holy Spirit begins a work in you that continues to grow and develop throughout your life. Paul called it “being transformed into the same image from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Regeneration also brings relationship. You are not just changed—you are connected to God. The Spirit within you enables you to know Him, hear Him, and walk with Him. He cries out, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15) from within your heart.
You are not a slave trying to earn favor; you are a child born into a family.
Understanding the new birth helps you avoid a shallow view of Christianity. It is not about outward appearance—it is about inward transformation. It is not about following rules—it is about receiving life. It is not about trying harder—it is about being made new.
As you grow in this reality, you begin to live from a new place. You are not striving to become something you are not—you are living from who you already are in Christ. You are not trying to earn God’s love—you are learning to live as His beloved child.
Christ-Centered Focus
Ultimately, the Holy Spirit is the one who brings you into this new life. But He does it by uniting you to Christ. To be born of the Spirit is to be united with the Son. The Spirit takes what belongs to Jesus and makes it yours. His righteousness becomes your righteousness. His life becomes your life. His victory becomes your victory.
Through Him, you are made new, connected to God, and empowered to live differently.
Conclusion
Today, if you have been born again, rejoice! You are not the same person you once were. You have been given new life, a new nature, and a new identity. If you have never experienced this new birth, cry out to the Spirit. Ask Him to do in you what you cannot do for yourself. He is the One who gives life to the dead.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for the new life You have given me. Help me to understand and live in the reality of being born again. Continue Your work in me, transforming my heart and aligning my life with God’s will. Let my life reflect this new nature. I do not want to live from the old self; I want to live from the new creation You have made me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
