April Day 4 devotional - Faith and God's Character - Numbers 23:19

APRIL — DAY 4: Faith and God's Character

APRIL — DAY 4: Faith and God’s Character

Date: Saturday, April 4, 2026

Focus Scripture:
“God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” — Numbers 23:19 (KJV)

What You Will Walk Away With

  1. Faith Rests on Who God Is — You will discover that faith is not ultimately about believing that circumstances will change, but about trusting the unchanging character of God.
  2. God Cannot Lie — You will understand that God’s truthfulness is the foundation of all His promises; He is not like humans who fail, forget, or change their minds.
  3. The Certainty of God’s Word — You will learn that what God has spoken, He will perform—not because circumstances demand it, but because His character demands it.

Devotional

What happens to your faith when circumstances do not change?

When prayers seem unanswered, when the waiting stretches long, when the visible says one thing and God’s promise says another—where do you anchor your trust?

The answer is found in who God is, not in what you see.

Numbers 23:19 gives us one of the most foundational truths about God’s character: “God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?”

This verse is a declaration of God’s utter reliability. He is not like us. We fail. We forget. We change our minds. We say things we do not mean. We promise what we cannot deliver. But God is different. He does not lie. He does not change His mind. What He says, He does. What He speaks, He makes good.

Faith rests on this reality.

Think about the difference this makes. If your faith is anchored in your circumstances, it will rise and fall with every shift in your situation. When things go well, faith feels strong. When things fall apart, faith crumbles.

But if your faith is anchored in God’s character, it remains steady even when everything else shakes. Not because you are strong, but because He is faithful. Not because circumstances are favorable, but because God cannot fail.

Balaam spoke these words under divine inspiration, and they echo through Scripture. God is not a man that He should lie. He does not break His covenants. He does not abandon His promises. He does not forget His word.

Every promise you hold dear is backed by the character of God. He said it. He will do it. He spoke it. He will make it good.

This is why Abraham could hope against hope (Romans 4:18). Not because he could see the fulfillment, but because he knew the Promiser. Not because circumstances lined up, but because God’s character never wavered.

This is why David could write, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Not because life was easy, but because he trusted the Shepherd’s character.

This is why Paul could declare, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” (2 Timothy 1:12). Not because he understood everything, but because he knew the One he trusted.

Christ-Centered Focus

Jesus Christ is the ultimate demonstration of God’s faithfulness.

God promised a Redeemer from the very beginning. He spoke through the prophets. He made covenants with Abraham, David, and the nation of Israel. And in the fullness of time, He sent His Son.

Did God lie? No. He kept His word.

Did God change His mind? No. He fulfilled every promise.

In Christ, every promise of God is “yes” and “amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20). The cross is the evidence that God does not lie—He paid for sin as He said He would. The empty tomb is the proof that God does not fail—He raised His Son as He promised.

Jesus is the living embodiment of God’s faithfulness. In Him, you see that God is not a man that He should lie. In Him, you see that what God has spoken, He performs.

Conclusion

Faith is not about believing that circumstances will change. It is about trusting the God whose character never changes.

Today, if your faith feels shaken by what you see, look beyond your circumstances to the character of God. He is not like you. He does not fail. He does not forget. He does not lie. What He has said, He will do. What He has spoken, He will make good.

Anchor your faith not in the shifting sands of your situation, but in the unshakeable rock of God’s character. He is faithful. He always has been. He always will be.

Prayer

Faithful God,
Thank You that You are not like me. You do not fail. You do not forget. You do not lie. Forgive me for the times I have anchored my faith in circumstances instead of in Your unchanging character. Help me to trust not in what I see, but in who You are. You have spoken. I believe You will do it. You have promised. I trust You will make it good.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Action Points

  1. Identify one promise of God that feels delayed in your life. Write it down and meditate on Numbers 23:19 beside it.
  2. Remind yourself that God’s character is unchanging. When doubt arises, say aloud: “God is not a man that He should lie. He said it. He will do it.”
  3. Anchor your faith in who God is, not in what you see. Choose one area where you have been trusting circumstances more than God’s character, and consciously shift your trust.

Memory Verse
“God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” — Numbers 23:19 (KJV)
