Growth Is a Process
July 3
Focus Scripture
“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
— Hebrews 5:12–14
What You Will Walk Away With
- Spiritual maturity develops progressively over time
- Growth requires continual learning and application of God’s Word
- The Holy Spirit leads believers from spiritual infancy to maturity
God never intended spiritual growth to happen instantly. Just as physical growth occurs through stages, spiritual maturity is a lifelong process. Every believer begins as a spiritual infant and is gradually shaped into the likeness of Christ through God’s grace.
The writer of Hebrews challenges believers who had remained spiritually immature longer than they should have. Although enough time had passed for them to teach others, they still needed instruction in the foundational truths of God’s Word. This reminds us that growth is measured not merely by the passage of time but by increasing maturity in Christ.
Spiritual infancy is not a problem; remaining there unnecessarily is. God desires every believer to continue growing beyond the basics into a deeper understanding of Christ and His purposes.
The passage contrasts milk with solid food. Milk represents foundational truths, while solid food represents deeper spiritual understanding that comes through maturity. As believers continue walking with Christ, the Holy Spirit prepares them to receive greater understanding and wisdom.
Growth also requires practice. Mature believers are described as those whose senses have been trained through constant use to discern good and evil. Spiritual maturity is developed as God’s truth is consistently applied to everyday life.
Knowledge alone does not produce maturity. Transformation occurs when believers obey what God reveals. As truth is lived out, discernment increases and spiritual understanding deepens.
The Holy Spirit faithfully leads believers throughout this journey. He teaches, corrects, encourages, and strengthens them, patiently producing the character of Christ over time.
Believers should therefore avoid unhealthy comparison. God works uniquely in each person’s life. Some lessons are learned quickly, while others require seasons of waiting, refinement, and repeated dependence upon Him.
Growth also requires humility. Mature believers never outgrow their dependence on God. In fact, the more they grow, the more deeply they recognize their need for Christ and His grace.
The goal is not simply to know more but to become more like Jesus. Every season of growth is designed to reveal His life more fully through those who belong to Him.
Ultimately, spiritual maturity is the beautiful result of continually abiding in Christ and yielding to the Holy Spirit.
Growth is a journey of becoming increasingly like Jesus.
