A Mature View of the Miraculous

The Marks of Maturity
Paul’s concern for the Ephesian church was that they would no longer be “children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.” This is a powerful picture of spiritual immaturity—unstable, easily influenced, and lacking discernment.
A mature view of the miraculous is not shaped by:
- Extreme experiences — What happened last week or in a particular meeting.
- Popular trends — What is currently emphasized or sensationalized.
- Personalities — Which minister or movement is most prominent.
- Emotional responses — What feels exciting or impressive.
Instead, a mature view is shaped by:
- Scripture — The unchanging Word of God.
- Truth — What is consistent with God’s revelation.
- Love — What genuinely serves others and honors Christ.
- Discernment — What is tested and confirmed.
- Balance — What avoids extremes and maintains perspective.
Avoiding Two Extremes
A mature view of the miraculous avoids two opposite errors:
- Cessationism — The belief that the miraculous gifts ceased with the apostles. This error denies the present work of the Holy Spirit and limits what God can do today. It can lead to a cold, powerless form of Christianity.
- Sensationalism — The obsession with supernatural experiences. This error exalts manifestations above Christ, ignores order and discernment, and can lead to manipulation and deception. It can result in spiritual instability and emotional dependence on experiences.
A mature believer holds a balanced position:
“I believe God still works supernaturally. I expect Him to move. But I will not make the miraculous the center of my faith. Christ is the center. The gospel is the message. And love is the foundation.”
This balance is not indifference—it is wisdom.
The Foundation of Maturity
What grounds a mature believer?
- A deep knowledge of Scripture — The Bible is the foundation for all truth and discernment. Without it, believers are vulnerable to deception.
- A Christ-centered focus — The goal is to know Christ, not just to see His power. Everything else must serve this purpose.
- A love-filled heart — Love is the most excellent way. Gifts without love are empty (1 Corinthians 13).
- A humble spirit — Maturity recognizes that we do not have all the answers and remain dependent on God’s grace.
- A discerning mind — We test everything and hold fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
- A patient trust — We trust God’s timing and wisdom, even when we do not understand.
Maturity in Practice
What does a mature view of the miraculous look like in daily life?
- When a miracle happens — We give God glory, point people to Christ, and remain humble.
- When a miracle does not happen — We continue trusting God, relying on His grace, and serving faithfully.
- When a new teaching or manifestation appears — We test it against Scripture, examine the fruit, and exercise discernment.
- When we experience the supernatural — We rejoice but do not become dependent on the experience.
- When others experience something different — We celebrate what God is doing without comparison or competition.
The Goal of Maturity
The goal of spiritual maturity is not to have all the answers or to be free from questions. The goal is to be grounded in Christ so that we are not easily moved by every wind of doctrine.
Maturity is the ability to:
- Trust God when we do not understand.
- Love people when they disappoint us.
- Stay faithful when we do not see the results we desire.
- Discern truth from error with humility.
- Keep Christ at the center of everything.
This is the mature view of the miraculous—one that is grounded in Scripture, shaped by love, centered on Christ, and marked by wisdom.
Prayer
Father, help me to grow into spiritual maturity. Teach me to hold a balanced view of the miraculous—neither denying Your power nor becoming obsessed with experiences. Ground me in Your Word, keep me centered on Christ, and fill me with love and discernment. Let my faith be stable, tested, and Christ-honoring. Amen.
