FEBRUARY — DAY 23: PRAYING FOR BELIEVERS & MINISTERS — STRENGTHENING THE BODY OF CHRIST

Devotional
The Church advances by preaching—but it is sustained by praying. Behind every faithful sermon, every courageous mission, every season of fruitfulness, there is unseen intercession. The work that is visible is carried by the work that is invisible.
Paul understood this deeply. Again and again, he asked churches to pray for him. Not because he lacked faith, but because he knew that no one outgrows the need for intercession. An apostle needed prayer. A church planter needed prayer. A prisoner for the Gospel needed prayer. If Paul needed the prayers of believers, how much more do those who labor among us today?
Praying for one another is not a secondary activity—it is a primary means by which the Body of Christ is strengthened.
When we pray for believers:
- We build unity. Prayer aligns hearts around shared dependence on God. It is difficult to harbor division against someone you regularly bring before the throne.
- We strengthen faith. Knowing others are praying for us fortifies our trust in trials and encourages perseverance when we would otherwise grow weary.
- We encourage perseverance. Prayer is not merely asking God to help others—it is also telling them, through the Spirit, that they are not alone.
When we pray for ministers:
- We guard them spiritually. Those who lead are often targets. Prayer creates a shield of protection around their hearts, minds, and families.
- We grant wisdom and clarity. Leaders face decisions daily that affect souls. Prayer invites divine wisdom into their counsel and clarity into their preaching.
- We sustain courage and humility. Ministry requires both boldness and brokenness. Prayer keeps leaders from pride on one side and despair on the other.
Paul’s requests for prayer reveal what he knew he needed: “Pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored” (2 Thessalonians 3:1). He did not ask primarily for comfort, safety, or ease. He asked for the Gospel to advance. His prayer requests were shaped by his mission.
Here is the foundation beneath all intercession for the Church: Jesus prays for us first.
In John 17, He prayed for His disciples—and for all who would believe through their message. He asked the Father to protect them, unite them, sanctify them, and bring them to glory. That prayer did not end when He ascended. The writer of Hebrews tells us He “always lives to make intercession” for us (Hebrews 7:25).
When we pray for believers and ministers, we are not initiating something new—we are joining something already underway. We align our hearts with Christ’s ongoing work. We echo His prayers. We participate in His ministry of intercession.
Prayer strengthens the Body from within. It is the circulatory system of grace, carrying life to every part.

Father,
Strengthen Your Church—not in numbers only, but in truth and love. Uphold those who labor in the Gospel: guard them from discouragement, grant them wisdom, sustain their courage, and deepen their humility. Holy Spirit, unite believers across every divide and make us a people who carry one another before the throne.

- I declare that my prayers for the Church are not secondary—they are essential to its strength and advance.
- I declare that I will cover ministers with intercession rather than criticism, supporting their labor through unseen faithfulness.
- I declare that because Jesus intercedes for the Church, my prayers join a work already underway.
Action Points
- Pray intentionally for your local church. This week, set aside specific time to pray for your pastors, elders, ministry leaders, and the spiritual health of your congregation. Use a church directory or list as your guide.
- Cover ministers with prayer, not criticism. Before you speak about a leader’s weakness, spend as much time praying for their strength. Let intercession be your first response.
- Encourage others by letting them know you are praying. Send a brief message to a believer or minister: “I prayed for you today. Specifically, I asked God to [specific request].” Words strengthen when they follow prayer.
