MAY — DAY 17: The Gifts of the Spirit (Given by Grace)
Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026
Focus Scripture:
“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” — 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 (KJV)
What You Will Walk Away With
- Spiritual Gifts Are Given by the Holy Spirit, Not Earned — You will discover that these gifts are not rewards for maturity or status; they are given by grace as the Spirit wills.
- Every Believer Has a Role in the Body of Christ — You will understand that God distributes gifts diversely; every believer has a unique role, and every role matters.
- The Purpose of Gifts Is to Benefit Others, Not Self — You will learn that your gift is not primarily for you—it is for the building up of the body of Christ.
Devotional
The Holy Spirit does not only transform your life—He also equips you to serve. One of the most beautiful and practical ways He does this is through spiritual gifts. These are supernatural abilities given by the Spirit to accomplish God’s purpose through you. You were not saved to sit on the sidelines; you were saved to serve.
Scripture makes it clear that there are different kinds of gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. Paul lists several: prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, mercy, wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, discernment, tongues, interpretation—and this is not an exhaustive list.
This diversity is intentional. God does not make every believer the same. He does not stamp out identical copies. He distributes gifts according to His wisdom, creating a body with many different parts, each with its own function.
This means your gift is not something to compare or compete with. It is not a contest. You do not need to wish you had someone else’s gift. The eye should not say to the hand, “I have no need of you” (1 Corinthians 12:21). You need what others have, and they need what you have.
Every believer has a role, and every role matters.
Spiritual gifts are not rewards for maturity—they are given by grace. You do not earn them through effort, status, or years of faithful service. They are not badges of honor for the spiritually elite. They are given by the Holy Spirit as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11). This keeps the focus on God, not on human ability. If you have a gift, it is because God gave it—not because you deserve it.
The purpose of these gifts is clearly stated: they are given “to profit withal.” In other words, they are meant to benefit others. Your gift is not primarily for you—it is for the building up of the body of Christ. It is for serving, strengthening, and encouraging fellow believers.
This corrects a common misunderstanding. Spiritual gifts are not for personal display or recognition. They are not for making you feel important or superior. They are not trophies to be admired. When used rightly, they serve, strengthen, and encourage others. They point away from self and toward Christ.
Think of the difference. A gift used for self says, “Look at me.” A gift used for others says, “Look at Him.” The Spirit gives gifts not to make you look good, but to make the body strong.
The Holy Spirit works through these gifts in different ways. Sometimes it may be through speaking—teaching, preaching, encouragement. Sometimes through serving—meeting practical needs, organizing, helping. Sometimes through leading—guiding, directing, overseeing. Sometimes through giving—generosity, hospitality. Sometimes through prayer—intercession, faith. Regardless of the form, the source remains the same—the Spirit of God.
As you grow in your walk with the Holy Spirit, you become more aware of how He has equipped you. You begin to see opportunities to serve and respond to them with willingness. You notice where you are effective and where you are energized.
It is important to remain humble. Since the gifts come from God, there is no room for pride. You did not earn them; you received them. They are not your achievement; they are His grace. At the same time, there is no room for neglect. What God has given you is meant to be used. To hide your gift is to rob the body of what it needs.
The more you use your gift, the more effective it becomes. Like a muscle, it grows with exercise. Like a tool, it becomes sharper with use. As you step out in faith, the Spirit works through you to impact others.
Christ-Centered Focus
Ultimately, spiritual gifts are an expression of God’s grace and purpose. They reveal that you are part of something bigger than yourself—the body of Christ. And they always point to the Head, who is Christ.
Paul makes this clear: “There are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.” The same God—Father, Son, and Spirit—is at work through every gift. The gifts are not ends in themselves; they are means to the end of glorifying Christ and building His Church.
The Holy Spirit has given you something—use it to serve.
Conclusion
Today, do not compare your gift to others. Do not neglect what God has given you. Do not use your gift for self-promotion. Recognize what the Spirit has placed in your hands, and use it—humbly, faithfully, consistently—for the good of the body and the glory of God.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for the gifts You have placed in my life. Help me to recognize and use them for God’s purpose. Remove comparison and pride, and give me a heart to serve others. I do not want to neglect what You have given me, nor use it for my own glory. Let my life be a channel of blessing to the body of Christ.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
