Order in the Use of Gifts

The Character of God
Paul establishes a foundational principle for the exercise of spiritual gifts: “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” This statement is not a suggestion—it is a declaration about the nature of God and the character of His work.
God is not chaotic. He is not disorderly. He is not the source of confusion, fear, or manipulation. Where the Spirit of God is truly at work, there will be order and peace.
This principle should govern everything that happens in the gathered church, especially the exercise of spiritual gifts. The presence of the miraculous does not suspend the character of God. If a manifestation produces chaos, fear, disorder, or confusion, it is not reflecting the nature of the One who gave it.
Paul’s instruction is particularly important because the Corinthian church had allowed their gatherings to become disorderly. People were speaking in tongues without interpretation, multiple people were prophesying at once, and the meetings had become chaotic. Paul corrects them not by forbidding the gifts but by insisting on order.
Practical Guidelines for Order
Paul gives specific instructions for orderly worship:
For Tongues (1 Corinthians 14:27–28):
- Two or at most three should speak
- They should speak in turn
- Someone must interpret
- If no interpreter is present, the person should remain silent
For Prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:29–31):
- Two or three prophets should speak
- Others should weigh what is said
- They should speak in turn
- Revelation should be given in an orderly way
For Women (1 Corinthians 14:34–35):
- Paul addresses the cultural context of the Corinthian church
- The principle of order extends to all participants
These instructions are not arbitrary restrictions—they are practical guidelines to ensure that the Church’s gatherings reflect God’s character of peace and order.
Why Order Matters
Order in the use of gifts is important for several reasons:
- It reflects God’s nature — God is not chaotic; His work is characterized by peace.
- It enables edification — When things are orderly, people can understand and be built up.
- It prevents confusion — Confusion hinders worship and distracts from the message.
- It protects against manipulation — Order creates accountability and transparency.
- It witnesses to unbelievers — Orderly worship is a testimony to the character of God (1 Corinthians 14:24–25).
Paul’s instruction that these principles apply “as in all churches of the saints” means that order is not optional—it is a universal principle for the Church.
The Spirit of Order
Some believers fear that order will quench the Spirit. But Paul’s teaching demonstrates the opposite: the Spirit works through order, not confusion.
The Holy Spirit does not need chaos to move. He can work powerfully in a meeting that is conducted with reverence, wisdom, and order. In fact, order creates an environment where the gifts can function most effectively for the edification of the body.
Paul therefore balances two truths:
- Desire spiritual gifts — “desire earnestly to prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:39)
- Do it decently and in order — “let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40)
Both are essential. Zeal for gifts without order produces confusion. Order without zeal produces cold religion. The healthy Church combines both: a genuine desire for spiritual gifts and a commitment to order and peace.
Prayer
Father, teach me to honor Your character in the exercise of spiritual gifts. Help me to pursue the gifts of the Spirit with zeal while maintaining order, peace, and reverence. Let everything in the Church reflect Your nature and build up Your people. Amen.
